VPN一直断线?这里有2025年VPN掉线修复方法

开尔文·齐奥哥瓦 更新于 2025-07-08 信息经 凯特·维尔验证 前网络安全研究员

VPNs can sometimes disconnect or shut down unexpectedly. This can be annoying if it happens frequently, especially if it happens for no apparent reason.

Thankfully, there are quick fixes for the most common VPN connection issues. I’ve put together this list of the most common reasons and solutions for why your VPN keeps dropping connections, and even for those that don’t even connect in the first place.

How to fix the problem of frequent VPN disconnections?

There are a few reasons why your VPN keeps disconnecting : network and router issues, DNS server errors, and incorrect VPN settings. If your VPN keeps disconnecting, here are some quick fixes to try.

Expert tip : Check if your traffic is being transmitted through the VPN's encrypted tunnel. This can be determined by testing for IP/DNS/WebRTC leaks using a tool such as ipleak.net. If your IP address is being leaked, then your VPN is not functioning properly.

1. Change VPN settings

When VPN disconnects frequently, you should first check the VPN configuration and change the settings:

  • Switch VPN servers. Your VPN may be disconnecting because the server you chose is unstable. Switching to a different server in the same country may improve performance and connection.
  • Change your DNS server (if your VPN supports it). DNS servers translate domain names into IP addresses so your device can connect to websites and online services. Be aware that this may increase your risk of a DNS leak. This security hole can allow your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to see what you visit, even when you're connected to a VPN.
  • Use different protocols. VPN protocols determine how your device connects to VPN servers and transfers data, as well as connection stability, speed, and security. Switching security protocols can prevent disconnections. OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols are also good options. If you need to use a VPN on a mobile device, IKEv2 is ideal because it doesn't use as much battery.
  • Change the encryption level. The higher the encryption level, the greater the impact on the stability and performance of the VPN connection. Lowering the encryption level from the standard AES 256-bit algorithm to 128-bit encryption (which uses fewer encryptions) can prevent frequent VPN drops. However, not all VPNs support changing the encryption level.
  • Disable Trusted Networks. The Trusted Networks feature bypasses the VPN connection when you're connected to a trusted network, such as your home or office network, but it can sometimes cause connection issues and unexpected disconnections. By disabling it, the VPN will remain active regardless of which network you're connected to. Go to the VPN app's Settings and turn off the Trusted Networks feature.

2. Change WiFi settings

Sometimes the problem lies with your WiFi network or broadband connection. Be sure to check if your network is also dropping out frequently when you are not connected to a VPN.

If this happens, try connecting to another WiFi network (such as a neighbor's network, or a laptop or smartphone hotspot). If the problem no longer occurs, it is certain that the WiFi network is faulty and the VPN is disconnected, and you need to contact or change your ISP.

3. Restart your router

Temporary issues with your router may be affecting your connection. Turn off your router, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. This simple step can often resolve the issue and make your VPN connection more stable.

4. Use another port

As communication endpoints, network ports are susceptible to interference from firewalls or network configurations, leading to network congestion and connectivity issues.

In this case, you can fix the disconnection by manually changing the port. Doing so may affect your overall connection, so only use this method if you are sure.

5. Solve the problem of limited number of connected devices

Most VPN providers limit the number of devices that can be connected to a single account at the same time (most VPNs support up to 5 devices). Once you exceed this limit, you may be disconnected.

Installing a VPN on your router can solve this problem. This way, all devices connected to the router can use the VPN without any restrictions.

How to fix VPN connection failure issues

If the VPN doesn't connect at all, but the Internet works fine without the VPN, try the following:

1. Disable firewall and anti-virus software

Firewalls and antivirus software can sometimes interfere with VPN connections. Temporarily disabling them can help identify the source of the problem. Disabling firewalls and antivirus software can put your computer at potential risk, so be sure to turn them back on once you've identified the problem. Alternatively, you can add the VPN to your antivirus and firewall's list of trusted applications.

2. Update network drivers

Outdated or incompatible network drivers may cause VPN connection issues, and updating the driver may solve the problem. Specific steps: Go to "Device Manager", "Network adapters", right-click the driver, and then select "Update driver". Then restart the computer and connect to the VPN again.

3. Confirm login information

You may have accidentally entered the wrong password or username. You may want to check or reset your password or username.

4. Enable obfuscation

Some ISPs or network administrators may actively block or throttle VPN connections. Enabling obfuscation will disguise VPN traffic as regular traffic, allowing you to bypass restrictions and connect to the VPN without problems.

5. Disable Energy Saving Mode on your device

Power saving mode limits the performance of certain features and background processes, and can sometimes interfere with VPN connections. Disabling this mode can allow your device to run at optimal performance and make your VPN connection more stable. Simply go to Settings on your device and find the Battery or Power Management option.

6. Contact Customer Support

If all else fails, you can contact your VPN’s customer service team for help. Top VPNs offer 24/7 live chat support, as well as email, phone support, and FAQ or troubleshooting pages.

VPN is slow, what can I do?

It’s not uncommon to have a slow VPN, as many VPNs aren’t very fast on their default settings. But if your connection is really slow, you can try the following:

1. Fix network connection issues

A poor Internet connection can significantly affect VPN speeds. Disconnect from the VPN and run a speed test. If the test result is slower than your normal Internet speed, you can reset your router or contact your ISP to resolve the issue, or you can connect your laptop to the router with an Ethernet cable.

2. Connect to a nearby server

VPN servers can occasionally experience excessive network congestion, which can cause slowdowns. Switching to a server closer to your actual location can minimize lag.

3. Disable multi-hop function

Multi-hop routes VPN traffic through multiple servers to improve security and privacy. However, the extra routing process tends to slow down speeds. Disabling multi-hop simplifies the entire routing process, resulting in a faster VPN connection.

4. Change the packet and MTU settings

VPN packets and MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings determine the size of the packets transmitted over the network. If the packets are too large or the MTU is set incorrectly, performance and speed will be affected. If your VPN supports it, you may want to adjust the settings to further optimize your VPN connection.

5. Upgrade to a high-speed VPN

Sometimes a VPN can become drastically slow, even after multiple server changes. This is more common with free and low-cost VPNs, which often have smaller server networks that are often overcrowded.

How to Fix VPN Software Problems

If there is a problem with the VPN software, or if the VPN conflicts with other software on your device, it may also cause connection problems. Here are some solutions for such problems:

1. Restore VPN default settings

If you've adjusted your VPN settings, you can restore any customized configurations to their original state to eliminate potential conflicts or configuration errors.

2. Update VPN software

Using the latest version of your VPN reduces the likelihood of connection issues and software crashes, so be sure to update your software when prompted. This has the added benefit of allowing for security patches to be fixed and your data to be protected.

3. Delete old VPN software

Having multiple VPN versions installed on your device may cause conflicts between the different software, resulting in connection failures. Find and uninstall any old or unused VPNs on your device.

4. Reinstall VPN

If you're still having issues connecting to your VPN after trying the other troubleshooting steps, you can try reinstalling the VPN app. However, be sure to get the latest software version from the VPN's official website to ensure that your device has the correct components installed and configured correctly.

5. Update your device’s operating system

An outdated operating system version may result in a lack of necessary security patches or compatibility updates, which may affect the normal operation of the VPN. Updating your device's operating system to the latest version will get the latest bug fixes and optimizations, thus resolving connection issues.

Other VPN connection problems (and how to fix them)

VPNs don’t work with streaming sites like Netflix

Many VPNs claim to support popular streaming sites, but most of them are just lip service.

But even with a paid VPN, there will be times when it doesn’t work. If this happens, try connecting to a different server or ask the VPN for a list of servers that work. I personally think the second method is better and can save a lot of time and trouble.

VPNs don’t work in restricted countries like China

Countries like China and Russia have built firewalls to block citizens from accessing certain websites, including social media sites, news sites, and even VPN sites.

However, before downloading a VPN, always check the laws and regulations of the destination country to avoid getting into trouble.

Wrong VPN server location

VPNs usually have physical servers in a specific country. But in dangerous or costly areas, they may use virtual servers. Virtual servers are usually located in a different country than your chosen server location, but traffic is configured to make it appear as if you are in your chosen country. The problem is that some IP detection tools can't tell the difference, which can prevent you from accessing certain websites.

If you are concerned about virtual servers, you can ask the VPN for a list of virtual servers and avoid them. Some VPN providers will specifically mark virtual servers for easy identification. Virtual servers are usually a small percentage of the entire server network, so the risk of a VPN being detected is low.

Unable to find a previously connected VPN server

The best way to quickly find a server you’ve used before is to bookmark it or add it to your favorites. However, it’s possible that a server you used before is gone. This is sometimes because the server is down for maintenance and upgrades. This is usually temporary and uncommon, but sometimes longer downtime can occur. For example, a VPN might shut down all of its servers in an authoritarian country because of new privacy laws.

FAQ: VPN keeps disconnecting

Why does VPN keep disconnecting?

Two main reasons why VPNs frequently disconnect are unstable network connections and incorrect VPN configurations. Other possible reasons for VPN disconnections include VPN server failures, firewall or antivirus interference, VPN client issues, and ISP throttling. The good news is that most of these issues have simple solutions that can be fixed in minutes.

What happens if the VPN is disconnected?

VPN disconnection can put you at risk for privacy and security. This is because your network traffic is no longer encrypted and protected, and your IP address is no longer masked by the VPN IP address. Any third party snooping on your connection can see your real IP address and online activity. The best way to avoid these risks is to use a VPN with a kill switch. If the VPN disconnects, the kill switch immediately cuts off the network connection, ensuring that user data is not exposed.

After successfully connecting, the VPN keeps disconnecting, what should I do?

VPN connection issues can occur for many different reasons, so there's no single solution. The most common fixes include checking your WiFi network, switching VPN servers, and disabling firewalls and antivirus software. Ultimately, the solution depends on what's causing your VPN to disconnect frequently.

Why does the Internet disconnect after connecting to VPN?

This is usually caused by having a kill switch enabled. The kill switch blocks the internet connection if the VPN connection is lost. Another possible cause is that you have switched servers. The kill switch prevents accidental data leaks. If the problem is not fixed after disabling the kill switch, then the problem is caused by another reason, which has a quick fix. For example, you can check if there is a software problem or conflict between the VPN and your firewall or antivirus software.

Why can't I connect to a free VPN?

Free VPNs may sound tempting, but most are unreliable and have limited features. Connection issues are often caused by a small server network with slow, congested servers. This is not conducive to streaming, torrenting, and other downloading activities because the connection is not stable. A better choice is a premium VPN with a money-back guarantee, high-speed server networks around the world, and a risk-free trial.

Why does VPN on iPhone frequently disconnect?

This is more likely to happen if you have Power Saving Mode enabled on your iPhone. When Power Saving Mode is on, your iPhone automatically disables certain features, such as VPN, to extend battery life. To prevent frequent VPN drops, disable Power Saving Mode.

Another reason for VPN disconnection may be an unstable network connection. If your iPhone frequently switches between WiFi and cellular data, or the network signal is weak, it may cause the VPN to disconnect. You may want to try connecting to a different WiFi network or make sure that the cellular data connection is always stable; you can also try switching to the IKEv2 protocol, as it works better when the connection is unstable.

My Android VPN keeps disconnecting, what should I do?

First, make sure your network connection is stable, such as connecting to a stable WiFi network or using a cellular data plan with a strong signal. You can also try switching to a more stable VPN protocol, such as OpenVPN. You can also try other methods such as disabling the VPN's energy-saving function or turning off the Android device's power saving mode.
